Consumer Tips: Using outdoor lighting to improve your home exterior | News

SHREVEPORT, La. – When the sun sets and the deck light pops on, an unseen design element brings new life to your landscape — outdoor lighting.
Angi co-founder Angie Hicks shares how you can use outdoor lighting to improve the exterior look of your home. Not only does outdoor lighting improve the look of your home, but it’s also an important safety feature.
If you’re not sure where to start with your outdoor lighting project, start with the walkways first. Lighting your walkways and your patio are going to improve both safety as well as beauty, and it’s really the areas that you use the most.
Angie also shares that if you don’t want to light your entire pathway, you can mark the start or end of your walkway with a post light.
When thinking about the type of lighting you want to use for the outside of your home, you can choose from warm lighting, all the way to cool lighting, depending on where you want to use it. Warm lighting works best on pathways and patios to make a very welcoming environment, whereas the cooler light setting works well around plants to mimic the moon.
There are a lot of different types of lighting you can consider, but one that Angie recommends is sconces. She shares that these can be used not only to flank doorways, but also around garage doors or lining the wall of a patio or porch.
While the placement, hue, and temperature of the lighting around your house could make your home look beautiful, they also help to deter unwanted guests, as well as animals, and also creates a safe environment when you’re out walking around after dark.
